The
VESDA system is an aspirating smoke detection system that samples air from
a fire zone for the presence of smoke. The air sampling system makes this
possible by providing the means for transporting air from a fire zone to
the Detector.
The air sampling system is active, meaning that it continuously draws in
air samples by means of an integral aspirator (air pump). It is not
reliant on air currents in the vicinity of the Detector to bring smoke
particles into the Detector. As such, the VESDA system can function
effectively in all kinds of environments—from high air flows to still
air.
The basic component of the air sampling system (or sampling network) is the sampling pipe, usually of low-cost PVC pipe. Even the most complex sampling network can be inexpensively and simply installed, while maintaining maximum efficiency.
A
Wider Window of Opportunity
All
fires have four stages: Incipient (pre-combustion), Visible Smoke, Flaming Fire,
and Intense Heat. This chart shows the progression of fire over a time period.
Note
that the incipient stage of smouldering fires provides the widest window of
opportunity to detect and control the spread of fire.
VESDA smoke detectors can be configured to generate multiple alarms within this
window, to provide the Time needed to help minimize or prevent fire
loss.
